New bridge under construction in Turkey using Sennebogen crane
A modern, six-lane suspension bridge is under construction across the Sea of Marmara near the western Turkish town of Izmit. Turkish crane service provider Aydin Vinc is putting a 180tonne 2924 Sennebogen 5500 crawler crane to good use on lifting and logistics tasks.

When finished in 2017, the six-lane Izmit Bay Bridge, 50km east of Istanbul, will carry more than 5,000 vehicles per day. The suspension bridge will not only complete the highway from Istanbul south to Izmir on the Aegean coast, it will also be the fourth longest suspension bridge in the world at 2.7km.

With more than 250 cranes and other heavy equipment, Aydin Vinc is one of the largest logistics service providers in Turkey. The 5500 crawler crane is provided for this job by Aydin’s sales and service partner Forsen. The unit is powered by a 261kW diesel engine and has a 35.5m main boom to lift the massive bridge members into position.

The flexible crawler crane is particularly suited for the job thanks to its stable wide-gauge undercarriage and 16kN winch. The Maxcab comfort cab, which can be inclined up to 20°, offers the operator an ideal view of the work area, essential for maneuvering the heavy steel and precast concrete road sections.

Aydin Vinc said low operating and service costs and excellent support from Turkish dealer Forsen were behind the purchase of the crane directly from Germany.
