The ground has been broken for Germany’s four-lane 1.9km Auerberg Tunnel near the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The €167 million (US$200 million) twin-bore project is part of the bigger four-lane extension of the B2 highway between the end of the A95 at the municipality of Eschenlohe and the city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

The client is Southern Bavaria Highway Authority and completion of the tunnel is expected in 2023.

The tunnel and highway widening and extension should relieve traffic congestion in an area noted for its winter skiing and summer holiday activities.
