The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA) has granted a lifetime achievement award to Dr Ing Martin Herrenknecht. The award was presented at the recent ITA event in Singapore and reflects his experience in delivering a series of ambitious tunnelling projects. Key successes include the twin drive, 57km-long Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland that opened this summer; the Eurasia Tunnel road link under the Bosphorus nearing completion; the metro network under Doha with 111km of new tunnels. His entrepreneurial career in global tunnelling spans more than 40 years.
He has previously received a wide variety of accolades for his achievements, including the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany. Technical universities have awarded him honorary doctorates or appointed him Honorary Senator. And in German capital Berlin he is also being presented with the Werner von Siemens Ring, the highest technical engineering award in Germany, which has only been awarded to 36 people since 1916.
