The US$44 million project is being funded equally by the governments of both countries and work is expected to be complete in June 2013. This is later than had been originally planned but the timeline for the work was delayed due to the global financial crisis. The fourth Friendship Bridge would have originally been completed by December 2012 under the original plans. The Mekong bridge will be 14.5m wide and 480m long and will connect Chiang Rai in Thailand with Kunming in China, with the R3 road running through Laos.
