A new proposal has been put forward in New Zealand to cut congestion on State Highway 1. At present the Basin Reserve Roundabout suffers heavy congestion, delaying journeys for drivers. A US$122.3 million project (NZ$190 million) has been suggested by the Let's Get Wellington Moving (LGWM) group. This would separate local traffic from long distance traffic. However this has been criticised by the New Zealand Government for having insufficient information as to the specifics of the redesigned route or it would operate in practice.
