A new tolled road link has been proposed for the US state of Maine. The road would feature three lanes in either direction and provide an improved transport connection for the south of the state between South Portland and Gorham.

The project has been put forward by the Maine Turnpike Authority. The alignment has yet to be determined while approvals would be required for the project. The work has an estimated cost of US$220 million, although this could vary substantially depending on the chosen route.

The project is controversial. The 10km route would help reduce congestion in the area, which has a growing population. But there are environmental concerns over the work as well as concerns over its potential cost.

The suggestions for a new road link in this part of Maine have been discussed over many years but only now has the project gained sufficient momentum to be discussed more fully.
