An important road tunnel link is being proposed in Germany to connect the cities of Cologne and Bonn. The German highway operator, Autobahn, has now deiced on the preferred route for the project, first mooted in 2016.

The 3km tunnel will run underneath the River Rhine, providing a new link between the cities and cutting congestion and journey times for drivers. The tunnel will connect the existing A59 and A555 routes. The project is expected to cost €1.15 billion to construct and construction will take eight years.
