A new expressway link is under construction in Eastern China. The new route will feature two lanes in either direction and will connect the cities of Dongtai and Xinghua in Jiangsu Province.

The first stretch of the expressway from Dongtai is costing US$685.9 million to build. The expressway project is expected to cost a total of $1.085 billion when complete. The route is being designed for top speeds of 120km/h.

The work is expected to improve transport in this densely populated part of China.

Also in Jiangsu Province is China's longest underwater road tunnel, which is now open to traffic. The 10.8km Taihu Tunnel runs underneath Lake Taihu. The link features three lanes in either direction and has cost around $1.56 billion to construct, with work having started in early 2018 and having used more than 2 million m3 of concrete. The tunnel forms part of the new 44km highway connection between Wuxi and Changzhou.
