The Japanese Government is giving US$30 million towards construction of a new bridge in Nicaragua. The first payment of $5 million for this series of development donations has been made. This will help build the new Santa Fe bridge, part of a project designed to improve the Nicaragua's network of secondary roads known as Atlantico Corridor which will improve transport around the San Juan River that borders Nicaragua and Costa Rica. The 260m bridge will feature a central height of 17m. The Nicaraguan Government intends to open the tender process for the Santa Fe Bridge by October 2010 with work due to begin in 2011 and expected to require four years.
