Delays ahead for Slovakia’s Visnove tunnel

Slovakia's transport ministry says the 7.5km Visnove tunnel near Zilina, part of the D1 motorway, will be delayed by two years to open in 2022. The recent announcement came as the ministry agreed to an extension to the construction permit held by Salini Impregilo for work on the twin-tube tunnel. The design-and-build contract worth about €410 million was assigned to the Salini Impregilo-led joint venture DUHA in 2014 by the National Highway Company NDS.

Slovakia's transport ministry says the 7.5km Visnove tunnel near Zilina, part of the D1 motorway, will be delayed by two years to open in 2022.

The recent announcement came as the ministry agreed to an extension to the construction permit held by 7809 Salini Impregilo for work on the twin-tube tunnel.

The design-and-build contract worth about €410 million was assigned to the Salini Impregilo-led joint venture DUHA in 2014 by the National Highway Company 5891 NDS.

The highway runs past Lietavská Lúčka, Višňové and Dubná Skala in the Žilina region of northern Slovakia.

The tunnel is also part of Corridor 5 of the Trans-European Networks -TEN - which links Bratislava in Slovakia with Uzhhorod in Ukraine. It is financed by the Slovak government and the European Union through the European Investment Bank.
