The tender process for a contract for an upgrade to a section of Chile’s Route 5 will now open in September 2020. The 195km section of Route 5 between Talca and Chillan in Central Chile will be improved.

This tender was originally planned to open for bids in July 30th 2020, but due to the pandemic it will now open in 16th September 2020.

Route 5 is an important for transport in Chile, connecting the port of Puerto Montt in the south of the country with Arica in the north, close to the border with Peru, a distance of 3,100km by road. In addition, Route 5 also passes through Chile’s capital, Santiago.

Improving the stretch between Talca and Chillan is expected to cost in the region of US$700 million. This area is important for Chile’s economy as it includes a substantial portion of the country’s wine production and transport to and from the region is vital.
