The tender process for a major road project is now underway in Bulgaria. The €502 million project is for the construction of a 75.6km stretch of highway. The route will connect the town of Ruse, on the banks of the River Danube that forms the border with neighbouring Romania, and the town of Veliko Tarnovo, to the east of the capital, Sofia.
The tender process is split into two, for the section between Ruse and Byala and for the section from Byala to Veliko Tarnovo that includes the Byala Bypass. The project will help improve trade and transport between Bulgaria and Romania in particular, but also with Greece and Turkey to the south. This will help lift Bulgaria's economy.
