Wirtgen develops novel cutter wear system

Wirtgen’s novel inspection system offers a quick indication of wear rates on the cutting tools of the firm’s surface miners. Called the Wirtgen Pick Inspection (WPI) system, this tool comprises eight sensors that can make fast measurements and which are integrated into the cutting drum compartment of the surface miner. The sensors measure the degree of wear of the picks and the measuring process takes just one minute to complete, allowing it to carried out while changing trucks and reducing downtimes. The WPI system is said to be simple to operate and the measurement is made automatically at the push of a button. A separate mobile end device, which forms part of the cutting drum, marks the worn pick in colour on its display. The result is displayed clearly, allowing machine operators and service technicians to plan the necessary service intervals. The system also ensures that the cutting tools can be used for the maximum length of time.
