Consultant 2579 Mott MacDonald will carry out transportation planning for the development a new highway transport plan for the city of Jos in Nigeria’s Plateau State.
The project forms part of the Greater Jos Master Plan (2008-2025) and will help achieve more sustainable transport improvements and increase competitiveness in the city as an investment location. Mott MacDonald is operating as sub consultant to PW Nigeria. The project is being developed for the Ministry of Public Works, Plateau State and will improve the function, operation and safety of strategic roads throughout the city. The transport plan will identify road and highway improvement schemes on six strategic roads located within Jos and its environs. Stage 1 of the project is due for completion in spring 2012.
A small number of the proposed improvement schemes, dual carriageway corridors and grade-separated interchanges will be implemented over the next three years and will accommodate economic, population and development growth over the next 20 years. A longer-term highway investment plan will also be developed to facilitate the development and growth proposed in the Greater Jos Master Plan. Mott MacDonald will assess the future roadway needs and a strategic transport model will be developed and various improvement options tested. Preferred options will be reviewed in light of cost and the local authority’s vision for the city. For the preferred options, preliminary highway design drawings will be developed along with 3D visualisations. Mott MacDonald’s project manager Sean Doherty said, “At the moment, highway congestion severely affects travel mobility around Jos causing a large cost to the local population. With improvements to the road scheme, traffic congestion – which causes severe air pollution from exhaust emissions – and travel times will be reduced and competitiveness improved. The city has a number of topographical constraints, severe gradient differences and the road network is congested with significant junction issues to be addressed which will create some design challenges. With a track record in transport spanning over a century, Mott MacDonald has the experience and expertise to handle any aspect of transport planning.”
