Costing €554 million, the new Marselis Tunnel planned for Aarhus in Denmark will help lower traffic congestion in the city. The tunnel is intended to carry heavy truck traffic from the Port of Aarhus, reducing the number of these large vehicles using existing routes. This will help boost safety as well as cutting journey times.
Marselis Boulevard, together with Åhavevej and Aarhus Syd Motorway, forms the connection from the Port of Aarhus to the E45 motorway. The Port of Aarhus is Denmark's largest container port, which is why there is a lot of heavy traffic to and from the port. Building this tunnel under Marselis Boulevard will provide a more direct connection between the port and the E45.
However, the 2km tunnel is now likely to cost more than originally anticipated, which is now the cause of some controversy. The Danish Road Directorate (Vejdirektoratet) recently flagged the increased cost of building the tunnel link.
The preliminary design and environmental impact assessment of the project have been carried out. The public consultation process is underway at present and runs until 9th January 2025.
