Fitted with what Cat describes as field-proven Cat components to lower cost/tonne, the model’s load-sensing hydraulics and standard torque converter lock-up clutch are said to ensure optimum fuel efficiency, while a C15 diesel engine at 305kW provides the 986H with ample power. Configured as a high production machine for truck loading and large scale stocking applications, the 41.4tonne model has a 42.5tonne operating weight and a 5.4-6.1m³ bucket. The machine can load Caterpillar’s 38.6tonne capacity 770G truck in just four passes while the high lift version can load the larger 47.7tonne capacity 772G truck in five passes. Load-sensing hydraulics and torque converter lock-up clutch help reduce both fuel consumption and operating costs. Smooth shifting is claimed with the powershift type transmission, which has four forwards and three reverse gears.
The ROPS protected cab is said to be spacious and comfortable, with good all-round visibility and pressurisation and air-conditioning helping ensure the operator is comfortable throughout the working shift.
