A major dispute could arise following the cancellation of the project in Italy to construct the Messina Strait Bridge. The project was heavily funded by the Italian Government but has fallen victim to budget cuts. The Italian civil engineering specialist 3149 Impregilo has carried considerable preparation for the project however and has expressed concern as to whether it will receive compensation for the project having been cancelled. Impregilo won the contract for the project back in 2005. A sum as high as €300 million has been previously mentioned with regard to compensation for the cancelled project. The Messina Strait bridge project is intended to link the island of Sicily with the Italian mainland and has been planned for many years. The project has been started and stopped on a number of occasions and some have commented that the bridge may never actually be completed.
