J. Murphy & Sons Ltd has been appointed by DP World to deliver junction improvement works on the A13/A1014 interchange road - a critical link into the London Gateway site in south east England.

The London Gateway project near Stanford-le-Hope in Essex will comprise a deep water container port, Europe’s largest Logistics Park and a new access road linking the park to The Manorway (A1014) at Sorrel’s Roundabout.

The A13 / A1014 Junction Improvement project aims to increase the traffic capacity of the junction enough to offset the additional traffic that will be generated by vehicles using London Gateway Port and the Logistics Park.

John Kissane, civil engineering divisional director for Murphy, said: “The scope for Murphy is to widen the two-lane circulatory section of the A13 interchange to three lanes and alter the slip roads, approach roads and bridges which span the A13. Sections of road and rail bridges will be widened and modified to avoid disruption to the general public, while one bridge will be demolished entirely and replaced with a new wider bridge.”

The existing East Bridge will be widened further to the West to accommodate an additional lane of traffic. The West Bridge will be demolished and replaced by a wider bridge with provision for three lanes of traffic, verges and footways. The construction of new embankments and reforming of existing embankments on the slip roads will facilitate the new alignments.

Meanwhile, Murphy is currently making good progress on an existing contract at the London Gateway site to deliver embankment construction works on an advanced site clearance project. A critical element of the overall works, this will lead to the building and completion of the Port Access Road and Bridge.
