The cost of the Brent Spence Bridge project in Kentucky could rise by US $300 million, to around US $2.76 billion, if its completion is delayed by two years, according to a report by the US
The project is already said to be facing increased costs due to lack of guaranteed financing. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6's executive director, Rob Hans, said only $30 million of the required $70 million is in place for the design phase, due to start on 1 January, 2013. Construction is scheduled to start on 1 January 2015, with completion pencilled in for 1 November, 2022.
Under the project, a new, double-decker bridge, west of the existing Brent Spence Bridge, will be built. The existing bridge will also undergo renovation. Additionally, a 12.5km highway corridor to the new and existing bridge sites will also be upgraded.
The new Brent Spence Bridge is expected to be constructed on 1 June, 2016, with completion scheduled on 1 January, 2020.
